History

Shelton Street marks the historic parish boundary between St Giles-in-the-Fields and St Paul’s Covent Garden and the borough boundary between the Borough of Camden and the City of Westminster. It was originally called Castle Street after the line of defences built to protect London in the Civil War in the 1640s. The present street was laid out and built as houses in the 18th century and reconstructed again when the leases fell in in the 19th century, with much 20th century commercial building. This west end of the street retains part of its original domestic scale, particularly on the northern side. Mainly 20th century commercial blocks dominate the southern side.
