No. 78, Long Acre

No. 78, Long Acre, is a three-storey, three-bay, grade II listed property forming, with no. 79, Long Acre, part of a coherent terrace of ca 1840 that continues around the corner as no. 40, Drury Lane. Faced in white, Suffolk brick with painted stucco dressings. The windows at first floor level comprising 6-over-6 subdivided sashes are contained within interlinked, architraved openings with semi-circular arched heads. The windows at second floor level comprise 6-over-6 subdivided sashes are contained within simple openings with flat-arched heads. A modern, slated mansard roof extends around nos 78 and 79, and no. 40, Drury Lane.

At ground floor level, the shopfront is partly retained, partly restored late Victorian. The consoles to each side of the shopfronts appear to be original. It is painted inappropriately in white.

Nos. 78 and 79 Long Acre together with no. 40, Drury Lane are of particular special architectural and history interest and contribute positively to the character, appearance and significance of the Covent Garden Conservation area.

The owners of no. 78 need to be encouraged to repaint their shopfront in an appropriate traditional colour.
