20 Mercer Street, The Mercer Street Hotel
The utilitarian, flank elevation of the late 19th / early 20th Mercer Street Hotel comprises some ten uniform bays of windows set within a recently cleaned, white Suffolk brick elevation rising through five storeys, an attic-storey above a main cornice, and two further storeys contained within the mansard roof. The ground storey of the hotel comprises seven bays defined with a plain but clearly defined framework of entablature and piers, painted charcoal-grey, containing modern but traditionally detailed joinery and glazing.
Although unlisted, the building is of particular architectural and historic interest and of considerable townscape value contributing positively to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.
It is recommended that the provision of flower-boxes at first floor level could enliven the utilitarian character of the hotel building.
