Nos. 16 and 18, Earlham Street
This pair of plain, late-19th-century, two-bay, four-storey properties is faced in red brick with subdivided sash windows set in openings with segmental arched heads above shopfronts.
The shopfront of no. 18 appears to retain elements of the original shopfront, including its cornice and its retractable projecting canopy blind but has been altered. The shopfront of no. 16, while of traditional character, appears to be of modern origin and is missing its cornice and canopy blind as well as being poorly detailed. Regrettably, both shopfronts are currently painted white. However, both properties have attractive, sign written fascias and double sided, projecting hanging signs.
An unlisted pair of properties of both architectural interest and townscape value contributing to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.
The original shopfront of no. 16 should be reinstated as far as practicable - most importantly with its cornice and canopy blind restored, and both shopfronts repainted in appropriate colours. Importantly too, the visual impact of the two, highly conspicuous burglar alarm boxes located on each property at first floor level should be mitigated by their removal and relocation.
