Nos 158-160 (Freshwater House), and 162 Shaftesbury Avenue
Nos 158-160
A four-storey, four-bay building designed by William Brett of no. 10, Charing Cross Road – red brick with unpainted stone dressings. The plans are dated 5th March, 1890. The building originally comprised shops on the ground floor and flats above. The entire ground floor elevation is disfigured by unsightly white-tile and slate facing which extends across no. 162 immediately adjacent. Part of the building is also spoilt by a modern, flat-roofed extension at fourth floor level.
With the exception of the ground floor storey, an unlisted building of particular architectural interest and townscape value contributing positively to the character, appearance and significance of Seven Dials Conservation Area.
No. 162
A four-storey, three-bay, commercial building, with an original storey at fourth floor set within a roof-slope with dormers, with a single bay on the right hand side containing the half-landings of the staircase capped with a distinctive, domed turret of Arts and Crafts character. The upper floors faced in red brick, carrying the date 1900, with wide, segmental arched window-openings.
The entire ground floor elevation is disfigured by unsightly white-tile and slate facing extending from the south-west from the ground floor elevation of Freshwater House immediately adjacent.
With the exception of the ground floor storey, an unlisted building of particular architectural interest and townscape value contributing positively to the character, appearance and significance of Seven Dials Conservation Area.
The appearance of both the properties would be vastly enhanced by the removal of the white tile and slate facing to the ground floor elevation and the reinstatement of the original design. Freshwater House would be improved by the removal of the existing modern, flat-roofed extension at fourth floor level and its replacement with a mansard-roof set behind a parapet.
