No. 166a, Shaftesbury Avenue, The Chinese Church in London
Founded in 1820 as the Gower Street Memorial (Baptist) Chapel, it is now owned and occupied by the Chinese Church in London. A tall, distinctly unorthodox, gabled building of Hanseatic Gothic character, faced in red brick with salmon-pink terracotta dressings, the chapel provides an effective marker of the corner of Mercer Street.
Although unlisted, the building is of particular architectural and historic interest and of considerable townscape value contributing positively to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.
