Nos. 166-170 (even), Leader House
A four-storey, five-bay, late-19th or early-20th century property with a richly modelled, red-brick and Bath Stone elevation at first, second and third floor levels to Shaftesbury Avenue above a ground floor storey faced in black marble including the substantially-scaled, pedimented door-cases at the centre and to each side. There are strongly expressed gabled dormers at fourth floor level. The original shopfrontage now replaced with glazed areas to each side of the glazed doorway at the centre. Regrettably, the greater part of the original, marble frieze is now obscured with a long, light-coloured fascia carrying halo-illuminated, applied lettering. Retractable blinds project over the two glazed frontages to each side of the central entrance.
Although unlisted, the building is of particular architectural and historic interest and of considerable townscape value contributing positively to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.
It would be clearly desirable to remove the long, light-coloured fascia, and locate appropriate signing on the original black marble frieze.
