No. 25, Monmouth Street
This three-storey building was refaced in the late 19th century and there is a modern shopfront of 19th-century character and detail, well painted in a smart shade of dark blue, but spoilt by the addition of a wide and deep box at transom level containing a roller shutter. The appearance of the building is also spoilt by the double-height mansard at third and fourth floor levels; by an external fire-escape link to no. 23 at parapet level; and by the very poor condition of the sash windows at second floor level. The fascia has good neat sign written lettering.
Although unlisted, the property is of townscape value, contributing modestly to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.
The moulded decoration on the flanking console brackets at each end of the shopfront needs restoration and the sash windows at second floor level require repair and repainting. There is clear scope to remodel the property at roof level. There is scope to provide flower boxes in the window openings at first floor level.
