No. 2, Arne Street
No. 2, Arne Street forms the return elevation of nos. 83-84, Long Acre. Built as a bank the property has been converted for retail use at ground floor level and office use above. The street elevations are linked by a curved corner feature. It is a handsome, late-19th-century commercial building of four storeys with a mansard storey above, red brick with Bath Stone dressings. It dates from circa 1896. The ground floor has large glazed shop windows. The elevation is articulated by a major cornice and frieze running around the two street elevations, separating the ground and first floor storeys from the second and third floor storeys directly above.
The elevation to Arne Street comprises two extensively glazed bays with white painted joinery at first floor level separated by pilasters faced in amber-brown glazed bricks with carved Bath Stone leaf capitals identical to those on Nos 4-5, Arne Street. There are wide glazed stone mullioned and transomed windows at second and third floor levels. The curved corner to Long Acre has a shaped gable at high level and a single red granite column mullion in the first floor window. The Long Acre elevation has a Mercers' Company Maiden's Head plaque on it. The shopfronts at ground floor level are modern, with externally-illuminated lettering on the fascia.
The building is of architectural interest and considerable townscape value and contributes positively to the character, appearance and significance of the Covent Garden Conservation Area.
This is well maintained and this standard of management should be continued.
