No. 27, Monmouth Street
A three-storey, late-17th-century house, refaced in the early-19th century, with early subdivided exposed frame sash windows set behind rendered and painted linings at first and second floor levels. Until 1985, it was one of only three houses in Seven Dials to retain an original 17th -century ‘V’-shaped roof-structure. It is surprising that Listed Building Consent was given for such an alteration. There is a very fine Georgian shopfront painted appropriately in matt black – the fascia carrying externally illuminated sign written lettering. The brickwork of the upper storeys is appropriately maintained in a weathered condition. There is an iron bracket at first floor level with a projecting hanging sign. This is a smartly maintained traditional frontage which is an asset to the conservation area and sets the standard for future management of the building.
A property of both special architectural and historic interest and particular townscape value, contributing positively to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.
