No. 2, Mercer Street

This is the four-five storey, return flank of nos. 121-123, Long Acre. It is a refined, if sparsely detailed, almost Arts and Crafts design of fine red brickwork with white-painted, small pane sash windows. It dates from circa 1904. The principal architectural feature is a sharply moulded brick chimney on the skyline. This makes an important contribution to the conservation area. It was the work of the distinguished Edwardian architect William Flockhart (1854-1913) who trained in the Glasgow School of Art and Paris. He was responsible for blocks of luxury flats and houses in Kensington and in the country, and for the art-dealers Duveen Brothers’ showroom in Bond Street. The painted lettering on the brickwork reading ‘Armstrong Siddeley Connaught Coachwork’ is a carefully preserved historic detail reflecting the original use of the property.

An unlisted building of particular architectural and historic interest and townscape value contributing to the character, appearance of the Covent Garden Conservation Area.

This is an exceptional Edwardian commercial building which should be added to the Statutory List. Encouragement should be given to re-painting the ground floor shopfronts, presently painted white, in a stronger, darker colour.
