No. 35, Monmouth Street
A three-storey, early-18th-century, grade II listed house, heightened by a storey at third floor level, refaced and a shopfront installed in the early 19thcentury. Two well-detailed, subdivided sash windows at first, second and third floor levels. Both the upper storeys and the shopfront were successfully repaired and restored circa 1983. The retention of the painted Victorian lettering on the first floor brickwork relating to the former stationers business is a sensitive manifestation of good management and adds historical depth to the appearance of the building. The shop unit is linked with that in no. 37. Regrettably, the extensively restored but well-detailed shopfront is painted off-white. Whilst the fascia carries sign written lettering, the projecting bracket at first floor level carries no hanging sign. A projecting bracket fixed at first floor level on the party-wall line (with no. 37) carries a Covent Garden Lantern™.
A property of both special architectural and historic interest and particular townscape value, contributing positively to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.
The repainting of the shopfront in an appropriate dark colour is to be encouraged.
