Nos. 36-40 (even), Earlham Street
Nos. 36-40 comprise a short, four-storey, early-19th-century London Stock brick-faced terrace of houses. Each house has a single window opening at first, second and third floor levels containing 6-over-6 subdivided sashes, with a mansard roof storey above.
Nos. 36 and 38 have very attractive and well-restored and traditionally detailed shopfronts with external shutters at ground floor level, painted dark grey and dark blue. Each fascia has well-detailed consoles at each end. The stall risers below each window slope back to provide day lighting to the basements below. The fascia of no. 38 carries individual, gilt lettering: that of no. 36 carries sign written, gilt lettering. Neither of the fascias is illuminated.
The ground floor storey of no. 40 has only a pair of full-height painted, boarded doors and an entrance door – all painted black.
A listed terrace of particular special architectural and historic interest and considerable townscape value contributing substantially to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.
The brickwork of the upper storeys should not be cleaned.
