No. 38, Monmouth Street
A three-storey (with mansard attic storey above), post-War rebuilding (1958) of a late-18th-century house which formed a pair with no. 10, Tower Court, immediately to the rear. Although superficially of Georgian Revival character the elevations are poorly detailed with window openings at first and second floor levels with soldier arches rather than traditional gauged brick arches. The relatively new painted-timber shopfront is of broadly traditional character but possesses lacks a proper cornice and properly designed and detailed console brackets. Regrettably, any benefits of the installation of the shopfront are diminished by its being entirely painted, inappropriately, in white. The fascia carries sign written lettering, and there is a bracket that would have supported a projecting hanging sign. Three flower-boxes are seated in purpose-designed, wrought-iron supports fixed below the cills of the three windows at first floor level.
An unlisted building of modest townscape value contributing to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.
The shopfront would benefit from being repainted in an appropriate colour. The reinstatement of a non-illuminated, projecting hanging sign is to be encouraged.
