Nos. 42 and 44, Monmouth Street
These two properties are part of the grade II listed, three-storey terrace comprising nos. 42 to 48 (even), Monmouth Street.
No. 44
No. 44 is a brick-faced late-18th-century property with a well-preserved Victorian shopfront and door to the upper floors which retain several elements, including the stall riser, ventilation grill, lantern grill and doors. The original retractable projecting blind appears to be fixed in a closed position. Regrettably, the entire shopfront has been painted inappropriately in white. There is sign written lettering along the fascia. There is a non-illuminated, projecting hanging sign. Two flower boxes are seated on the cills of the two windows at first floor level.
A building of both special architectural and historic interest and townscape value contributing to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.
There is a clear need to encourage the re-painting of the shopfront in an appropriate colour.
No. 42
No. 42 forms the northern end of the terrace. It retains its original interior, including the staircase and a pair of fitted, glazed china-cabinets in the first floor front room. The Victorian shopfront and door to the upper floors have been well restored together with beautiful scroll console brackets flanking the fascia. The fascia carries sign-written gilt lettering, and there is a bracket that would have supported a projecting hanging sign. Two flower-boxes are seated in front of the two windows at first floor level on the lead-covered ledge above the shopfront.
A building of both special architectural and historic interest and townscape value, contributing to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.
The shopfront is painted in light grey and would benefit from being repainted in a stronger and more appropriate colour. The reinstatement of a non-illuminated, projecting hanging sign is to be encouraged.
