Nos. 46-48, Monmouth Street

Nos. 46-48 form the southern end of the grade II listed, three-storey terrace comprising nos. 42 to 48 (even), Monmouth Street,

No. 48
No. 48 dates from 1790. The brickwork at first and second floor levels has been sensitively cleaned and repaired and the two, undivided, Victorian sash windows at first and second floor levels reinstated, which has enhanced the conservation area. The Victorian shopfront and door to the upper floors, including the ventilation grill, have been restored and painted appropriately in dark olive-green with gilded lettering on the window glass. The original, retractable, projecting blind appears to be fixed in a closed position.

Whilst there is no lettering on the fascia, there is a small, non-illuminated, projecting hanging sign of appropriate scale and character and a Covent Garden Lantern at first floor level on the line of the party wall. Two flower boxes are seated in front of the two first floor window openings on the lead-covered ledge above the shopfront.

A building of both special architectural and historic interest and townscape value contributing to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.

The restoration of the overall frontage is an example of thoughtful maintenance which should be the norm in the conservation area and should be continued in the future.

No. 46
No. 46 is brick-faced property which retains its original late-18th-century interior with plain staircase, some cornices and dados. With the exception of the modern pair of entrance doors and top light, the Victorian shopfront and door to the upper floors, all painted dark blue, are a good survival with non-illuminated, applied lettering on the fascia and an incised ‘46’ at the right hand end. The original, retractable, projecting blind appears to be fixed in a closed position. There is a non-illuminated, projecting hanging sign. Two flower boxes are seated on the cills of the two windows at first floor level.

A building of both special architectural and historic interest and townscape value contributing to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.

It is important to ensure that the shopfront and door to the upper floors remain suitably painted.
