Appraisal

No. 49 and 51, Endell Street

Of four storeys and three bays, faced in painted stucco, the unlisted no. 49, Endell Street carries through the line of the parapet, the cornice (running below the third floor attic level windows and the alignments of the fenestration and the shopfront height of the listed 1840s terrace to the immediate north-west – nos. 51 to 59 (odd), Endell Street.

The fact that the window openings at first, second and third floor levels are wider and shorter than those of the listed terrace immediately to the north-west and have no architraves or pedimented canopies (the consoles supporting the window cills are also missing) clearly suggests that the property has been rebuilt in part or in whole. The street frontage at ground floor is an extension of the frontage of the restaurant at no. 47. The window openings of the upper floors contain subdivided black painted Crittall steel windows. The painted lettering on the fascia is a good example of traditional signwriting of the type which should be encouraged in the conservation area.

In its present state, the property is of only limited townscape value and contributes only modestly to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.

No. 51, together with 53, 55, 57 and 59 Endell Street, is part of a terrace of grade II listed, four-storey, three-bay properties with Italianate stuccoed frontages of circa 1840. A cornice runs along the terrace below the third floor attic level windows The original Victorian shopfront survives.

It is essential that the painted stucco of the elevation the entire terrace should be maintained and/or repainted in one, consistent off-white or other appropriate colour.
