Nos. 53 and 55, Monmouth Street
Listed at grade II, this pair of three-storey, with mansard attic storey above, brick faced properties date from circa 1720 but were re-fronted and the shopfronts introduced in the early-19th century. Two sash windows at first and second floor levels on each property. The interior of no. 53 contains late-17th century panelling and a staircase salvaged from no. 49, Monmouth Street when it was demolished in 1984. The shopfronts have been well restored. Whilst that at no. 55 is painted red, regrettably, that at no. 53 is inappropriately painted in off-white. There is neat and modest sign written lettering on the fascia of no. 55. No. 53 has a neatly designed internally-illuminated box sign hanging behind the shop window. Each property has attractive, non-illuminated projecting hanging signs at first floor level, and flower boxes seated on brackets in front of each of the windows at first floor level. The street numbers of both properties are incised into small ‘labels’ fixed to the respective fascias and are copied from some old ones in the block and are an unusual feature which adds character to the design.
A pair of properties of both special architectural and historic interest and particular townscape value, contributing to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.
The front elevations should be maintained as they are. The first floor could be enlivened by the provision of projecting hanging signs.
