Nos. 57 and 59, Monmouth Street
Listed at grade II, this pair of four-storey, brick faced properties date from the early-18th century but were re-fronted in the early-19th century when the conjoined shopfronts were added. Two subdivided sash windows at first, second and third floor levels on each property. The fine, wrought-iron Art Nouveau screen in the shop entrance was made by Comyn Ching and formed the principal entrance to their premises. The shopfront is painted in charcoal grey and the fascia and the non-illuminated projecting bracket sign have applied individual letters. The fascia on no. 57 carries the street number incised into a small ‘label’. A Covent Garden Lantern™ projects at first floor level and the four flower boxes are seated in brackets in front of the cills of the four first floor level windows.
A pair of properties of both special architectural and historic interest and particular townscape value, contributing to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.
The frontages require little further attention, and should be maintained as they are.
