Appraisal

Nos. 57-59, Neal Street

A somewhat utilitarian, four-storey, late-19thcentury building, faced in Suffolk (white) brick with modest red brick bands at each floor level, with an added mansard storey at fourth floor level. The window openings at first and second floor levels are spanned with cast-iron lintels. The opening at the right hand end of each floor level is treated as a vertical opening extending through the first, second and third floor levels containing inward-opening, half-glazed, double doors. The drop-down flaps have been removed and replaced with fixed balustrades. The extensively glazed shopfront is contained within a simple, white-painted rendered frame. The fascia carries externally illuminated, applied plastic lettering.

A building of modest architectural interest and townscape value, contributing modestly to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.

The building would benefit from improved, applied lettering and more sensitive illumination.
