Appraisal

Nos. 2, 2a and 4, Monmouth Street

Nos. 2, 2a and 2, form the four-storey rear elevation of the 1880s block fronting Shaftesbury Avenue (nos. 178-188) - red brick with red sandstone dressings. There are wide, altered late-19th-century timber framed shopfronts of appropriate design at nos. 2A and 4 at ground floor level - no. 2A painted mid-green-grey; no. 4 painted black. Both have externally-illuminated applied lettering on the applied and deepened fascias. No. 4 has a retractable projecting blind and both have eternally-illuminated projecting hanging signs. The former shopfrontages, including the original fascia at no. 2, which turn the corner of the block and return around to the Shaftesbury Avenue frontage, are badly disfigured by a mass of signs and posters.

Although unlisted, with regrettable alterations to the possibly original shopfronts at the corner, the greater part of the building is of particular townscape value, contributing positively to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.

It would be desirable to recover the original, shallower depth of the fascias of both nos. 2a and 4. The most pressing need is to reduce the excessive display of posters on the frontage of no. 2a and reinstate the shopfronts behind.
