Appraisal

No. 78, Neal Street

A grade II listed, four-bay, 17th century survival of three storeys with a further storey contained within the roof-slope. Regrettably, the entire front elevation at first and second floor levels has been stuccoed and painted gloss dark green with white-painted bands, and the sash-windows have lost their subdivisions. The robustly and richly detailed, mid-19th century shopfront is well preserved and painted bright blue. The fascia carries applied, gold-painted lettering, crudely, externally illuminated.

A building of special architectural and historic interest and townscape value, contributing to the character, appearance and significance of the Seven Dials Conservation Area.

Every effort should be made to encourage the repainting of the stucco-facing of the upper floors to a more appropriate colour, the reinstatement of the glazing-bar sub-divisions of the window-sashes, and to replace the crude external illumination of the fascia.
