Nos. 9-15, Neal Street

A large, four-storey, utilitarian, 1950s commercial block faced in light red brick. Ten bays of modern casement windows at first, second and third floor levels above three tall openings at ground floor level, containing modern shopfronts and an office entrance. It forms an undemonstrative interlude between the two distinctive, surviving 19th-century brewery buildings.

There are three modern shopfronts at ground floor level, separated by brick piers with blue bull nose edges which are acceptable in their own right. That serving The Tea House at no. 15 (‘Established in 1982’) has an amusing design like a tier of shelves, displaying tea caddies and tea-pots. This is the sort of imaginative design which enhances the conservation area.

Whilst the greater part of the building possesses little architectural interest or townscape value, the shopfront at no. 15 contributes positively to the character, appearance and significance of the Covent Garden Conservation Area.
