History

This section of Mercer Street was formerly known as Little White Lion Street. It forms the north-eastern side of the Comyn Ching Triangle named for the architectural ironmongers, whose deeds date back to June 1736, which came to own all the triangle between Shelton Street, Mercer Street and Monmouth Street. In 1985-1987, Terry Farrell and Partners’ carried out a very successful conservation-based development comprising restored historic buildings and new buildings at the corners, grouped around a newly created, central open space.

The four grade II listed 18th century properties at nos. 21, 23, 25 and 27, Mercer Street, are contained between the new and much taller, residential and office buildings at the corners of Shelton Street and The Dials – no. 19, Mercer Street and nos. 29-31, Mercer Street. Their listing in November, 2016 was long overdue.
