History

Mercer Street, which runs from Shaftesbury Avenue, over the Dials and through to Long Acre, takes its present name from the ground landlord, the Mercers’ Company, one of the oldest of the City of London’s ancient Livery Companies, dating back to the 14th century.

This section of Mercer Street contains the most interesting buildings erected in the late-19th and early-20th century on the Mercers’ Long Acre Estate. Unlike much of the other redevelopment at that date, which was largely commercial, this section contains several blocks of well-designed social housing, reflecting the philanthropic aspect of City Livery Companies in the Victorian era and 20th century.
