History

Shelton Street marks the historic parish boundary between St Giles-in-the-Fields and St Paul’s Covent Garden and the borough boundary between the Borough of Camden and the City of Westminster. It was originally called Castle Street after the line of defences built to protect London in the Civil War in the 1640s.

This north-western side of the street is lined by a series of closely related, substantially scaled, robustly detailed former industrial buildings. Grade II listed, London Stock brick-faced, mostly 19th century, they once formed part of Coombe & Company’s Wood Yard Brewery and are splendid examples of the industrial aesthetic. Their stern grandeur is enhanced by their not being cleaned. No. 33 is a key architectural element and marks an entry-point into the heart of the Seven Dials area. The group comprises separate but inter-linked buildings – nos. 25, 27-29 and 31-33, Shelton Street.
