This section sets out the approach for harmonising the streets in historic areas that needs to work for the twenty-first century. It analyses the existing streetscapes and proposes a uniform approach suited to the formal historic layout of both the core Seven Dials Conservation Area and the adjacent Covent Garden Conservation Area. As the Leader of Westminster City Council writes in his foreword: ‘The streets section proposes long-term improvements providing consistency and detail across the two borough’s border and is aligned with the principles laid-out in our 2021 ‘Covent Garden Public Realm Framework’.‘

Introduction
This section seeks to achieve a calm and dignified setting for the Sundial Pillar and for all seven radiating streets to be finished to a consistent design and palette for one of England’s key conservation areas.

Harmonising the Streets
This section deals with the streets by type and how they should be unified in style and treatment in the formal set piece townscape of the Dials, captured in Paul Draper’s brilliant recreation of William Hodges’ 1776 painting of the Dials.

Street Furniture
This section contains guidance and information on the improvement and maintenance of street furniture in the Seven Dials area.

Lighting
Appropriate lighting is an important element of the historic environment and contributes towards a sense of place while also reducing street clutter. The Seven Dials Trust has been active in improving lighting and replacing columns with their own wall-mounted lamp.

Managing the Public Realm
This section covers elements of managing the area to ensure that it can be enjoyed by all who use it, maintaining a balance between commerce and residential amenity, looking at ways of protecting pedestrians and keeping the area clean and uncluttered.
